Question re: Have you noticed if there is a backup of people waiting
to use equipment? Ans: Sometimes, but most tend to be very flexible and use other equipment until the equipment they want
becomes available. Number of members using UFC varies depending on the seasonal sport. All in all a great environment to come to and train
and to help others - not
self only focused.
Need for community service - compulsory - essential part of membership
- 2 events sponsored
by UFC - 1 each semester to maintain Membership. Suggested way of phrasing - if you wish to be a member of the UFC your membership requires you to participate
in a UFC sponsored community service
program each semester and to purchase for resale a book of raffle tickets when a raffle is held.
Members in the UFC could be offered the opportunity to be assigned to
a community
service or to pick their own.
Need for a way to aid people in remembering the responsibilities assigned or undertaken - a task
bar on the web site was suggested. Robert
will put it on. Also a place to see if a member has completed his/her community service.
Thank you notes - printed up - Suggestion by Susan - hand write them,
have them signed
by each BOD member, get them out - Amanda has a lot of them done already.
Raffle - suggested a summer prize and a winter prize - winter prize being a room at the Harbor View
for Christmas in Edgartown, rental car, meals,
Minnesinger tickets, etc. Summer prize - air tickets to Boston, hotel, tickets to theatre/sport event etc.
suggested the teens raffle themselves off to do services like yard work
etc. also suggested
to get the membership list and see if any parents might wish to offer their special services for a raffle.
Fr. Nagle and Kevin will meet at the Vineyard Co-op Bank on Tue, May
6 at 2:30pm
to put Kevin on the bank account.

March 2, 2003
The meeting was called to order by Robert Reisch on Sunday, March 2 at 6:30pm.
I. The ABs members introduced themselves and indicated why they were present.
II. Hans Buder, president of the B.O.D. (Board of Directors , which is composed of 10 high school
students who represents all different parts of the high school body, specifically designed this way to be as inclusive of
all of the different students at the high shcool and to reach as many of them as possible and make they feel welcome at the
Underground Fitness Center), made a brief presentation on the philosophy of the fitness center.
He said that the purpose of the fitness center is to offer to high school teens from Marthas Vineyard the opportunity
to be introduced to a fitness oriented lifestyle. The high school students understand and appreciate the gifts of time,
talent and money that people from the community have given to make this fitness center possible. The name, Underground
Fitness Center, has been chosen and a logo has been created. In response to the generosity of the community, the students
recognize their need to give back and plan to organize group projects every month to aid the community - as their way of giving
back.
III. Robert then asked the ABs to create a mission statement.
The Mission Statement :
The ABs (Advisory Boards ) Mission is to help the Underground Fitness Center to be ongoing
by providing a facility and by advising, planning, fundraising, & visioning in support of our island teens.
IV. We talked about committees such as;
1 ) long range/visioning committee,
2 ) budget-fundraising-accounting-management committee,
3 ) marketing/pr committee.
However, it was unanimously agreed that the ABs would act as a unit in advisement
to the committees that currently exist in the Teen B.O.D.
V. We defined The Underground Fitness Center which iscomposed of a B.O.D. with
ABs, (i.e, a Board of Directors with and Advisory Board).
The Board of Directors is made up of High School Students who will meet every Sunday and develop ideas that they will
bring to their ABs.
The ABs, Advisory Board, will help the B.O.D. to refine, advise, consider feasability and help to implement these ideas.
The B.O.D. and its ABs has a wish list of machines and equipment but it was decided to be fiscally prudent and make sure
that we only purchase what we have the ability to pay for. In light of this we will set up a financial accounting system
so that the B.O.D. with its ABs knows its financial status at all times.
Right now the Underground Fitness Center has been created by the generosity of a number of people. It was discussed
that the Underground Fitness Center should try to network with the Island Council for Youth with Barry Rosenthal.
VI. The ABs will meet on the second Sunday of every month at 6:30pm at the Parish Center.
The length of the meeting will be 1 hour to 1hour, 15 min.
The next meetings will be on April 13 and May 11.
VII. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm
